Dog friendly landscaping
If you are going to landscape your yard, put in beds of flowers, raised beds of herbs, and a little patch for table
vegetables, you certainly don’t want to waste all that work just to have your pooch Fido go and ruin it all the first weekend. For that
reason, it is a good idea to employ some ideas for dog friendly landscaping, if you have dogs in your yard.
The best kinds of dog friendly landscaping will be good for both you and the four leggers, by providing distinct space for
both to enjoy themselves, without stepping on each other’s toes or messing in each other’s turf. If you put up conspicuous fencing, it
might ruin the ambience and the whole visual appeal of your landscape, though, so you can take advantage of some very cool dog landscaping
creations available at pet stores or at home improvement centers where you buy things for landscaping and yard work.
For example, you can get an invisible fence, either made of a smell repellent type chemical that is harmless to dogs but turns
them away, or you can use a small buzz of electricity and a special collar, to keep a fence around your plants in a dog friendly
landscaping strategy. You should consult with someone like a pet trainer or your vet, to make sure that whatever you use will not harm or
otherwise discomfort your pets. And if you don’t want to go that route, then there are some old fashioned low tech alternatives, and these
will also depend upon what kind of dog you have.
If you dog is not a huge fence jumper, then you can put up some attractive and organic willow, bamboo, or trellis style
fencing, only as high as necessary, to deter the dog and this will create a dog friendly landscaping project where you can all get along
just fine, without the dog burying bones in your flower beds or leaving a mess in the lawn where you like to go barefoot and play in the
sprinkler.
