Just because you live in the mountains or at the beach, it does not mean you can’t take advantage
of some Arizona landscaping. This style of landscape design, noted for its austere but clean and fresh look, depends upon the
kinds of natural ingredients and features you would use if you lived in an arid desert location like Arizona,
USA.
Many people will use Arizona landscaping to avoid having to cut grass, trim weeds, and worry about
constantly watering their gardenscapes. For instance, if you have a problem with returning weeds, and they make all of your
spare time into chore time, you might want to cover that area with landscape fabric, kill off the grass and weeds, and cover
the area with crushed rock or sand instead. Then you can introduce potted plants, either in traditional American Indian style
pots, or in whatever containers you have around. Some people even use recycled metal parts, tree stumps, or other items for
potting their plants.
If you climate can accept them in a hospitable way, then you can decorate your Arizona landscaping
plan with various types of cactus plants. Or you can create an Arizona style setting, and then use whatever kinds of plants are
suitable for your region of the country and gardening ability. When using cactus plants, keep in mind that they need a
particular type of soil, and if you are not familiar with growing them, do a little reading or consult an expert to get good
tips on keeping your cactus plants healthy. You will also need to consider the health and safety of your pets and the people
who use your landscaped area. You would not want small children to run the risk of injury from contact with a dangerously
prickly cactus plant, nor would you want to walk barefoot into one yourself, so take into consideration how and when you and
others will use this space.
Once you arrive at a plan for your Arizona landscaping, you will want to draw it all out on paper
or on poster board, to help you keep track of it as you install everything, step by step. Do you want to have a place to cook
in the middle of it all? And if so, do you want to use a portable gas grill, or would you prefer a chimenia or a handmade fire
pit or grilling area? And you can also change up the look and mood of your landscape, by mixing the arid desert attitude and
style with a water feature like a waterfall or a cascading column of water coming from an old pitcher, a fake antique well, or
a little stream running along the edge of your garden area.
